Faculty of Veterinary & Animal Sciences (FVAS)
Institute of Microbiology
Introduction
Gomal University (est. 1974) offers a four‑year BS Microbiology program under its Faculty of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, via the Institute of Microbiology. Entry requires F.Sc (Pre‑Medical) or equivalent qualifications from a recognized board. The program spans eight semesters and covers theoretical and practical courses across microbiology subfields: general, medical, environmental, agricultural, industrial, and food microbiology. Students also study molecular biology, genetics, immunology, virology, biosafety, and complete a research project or internship in the final semester.
The curriculum emphasizes hands‑on laboratory experience with well‑equipped diagnostic and research facilities, including exposure to real‑world microbial challenges in human health, agriculture, and food safety. Graduates are well‐positioned for careers in clinical labs, public health, pharmaceuticals, agricultural biotech, environmental agencies, or further study such as M.Phil or M.Sc in microbiology and related disciplines.
Mission:
Deliver Quality Education: Provide comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in microbiology to meet national and global scientific standards.
Develop Research Skills: Foster a research-oriented mindset through laboratory training and final-year research projects, promoting innovation in microbiology.
Promote Scientific Inquiry: Encourage critical thinking and analytical skills for solving problems in health, agriculture, food safety, and the environment.
Support Public Health Goals: Prepare graduates to contribute to disease control, diagnostics, and public health through microbial science.
Enhance Practical Competence: Equip students with hands-on skills in microbiological techniques using modern diagnostic and research labs.
Encourage Ethical Practice: Instill professional ethics, biosafety awareness, and environmental responsibility in students’ academic and practical work.
Prepare for Careers & Higher Studies: Enable students to pursue careers in labs, research, education, and industry, or continue toward M.Phil./Ph.D. in microbiology and related fields.
Objective:
- Equip students with theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills in microbiology and related disciplines.
- Enhance research capacity in the fields of microbial pathogenesis, epidemiology, and antimicrobial resistance.
- Develop and implement innovative diagnostic tools for zoonotic and emerging diseases.
- Promote awareness and education on biosafety, biosecurity, and infection control measures.
- Encourage student involvement in community-based disease monitoring and public health outreach.
- Support sustainable solutions to animal and human health issues using the One Health approach.
