Introduction of Department
Microbes are playing pivotal role in each environment of the planet. The broad discipline of Microbiology uses scientific and engineering principles to living organisms to provide goods and services of value to society. To address the challenges at global level, such as antimicrobial resistance and the emergence of new infectious diseases rely upon broadening the horizon of discoveries coming from basic microbiology research and exploration. We at Institute of Microbiology are committed to provide our undergraduate students with excellent quality of Education in our degree programs of BS “Microbiology” and “M.phil. in Microbiology”
Our faculty is highly productive, consisting of 2 Assistant Professors and 6 Lecturers housed at Institute of Microbiology. Our Institute is provided with well equipped Labs. All the faculty members are outstanding microbiologists who are making exciting discoveries in the field of microbiology while training students in cutting edge research. The institute has also made significant contributions in the field of conventional diagnostics. BS level had been trained and are serving in various capacities at different private and public establishments of the country. The Institute is actively engaged in teaching under- and postgraduate courses. Training workshops for students are also being arranged. Considering the dire need of Microbiology education, the Institute of Microbiology was established in 2017 at Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (FVAS) in Quaid Azam Campus, Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan by the approval of Higher Education Commission (HEC), Islamabad Pakistan.
The first batch students in Bachelor of Microbiology were admitted in 2017. Presently, the Institute of Microbiology is a strategic unit at the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal sciences, Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan. The institute incorporates both teaching and research facilities, primarily dedicated towards the awareness and development of Microbiology amongst the masses. Members of the Staff are involved in teaching at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels in degree programs and have collaborative links with national research and International laboratories.

Mission
The mission of Microbiology department is to promote good quality education, research and to provide the most rigorous and inspiring training in the discipline of Microbiology with greater significance of application in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Province of Pakistan. The Institute has been serving as teaching, training and research pivot in Microbiology for the province. The institute is aware of the importance and applicability of Microbiology and therefore will continue to play its catalytic role by motivating its students in their scholarly pursuits. We will prepare trained microbiologists able to approach problems with creativity and flexibility. A key element in this preparation is active participation in the process of scientific discovery. The institute will make scholarly scientific and technological advances that will address the changing needs of society.
Objectives
- To create a permanent platform for generating trained manpower by imparting education and conducting research to address the local challenges.
- To prepare students to function as scientists and educators in a broad array of biological disciplines.
- To collaborate with microbiology firms, secondary schools, universities and public agencies and associations, and lay the groundwork to prepare the workforce for new microbiology jobs.
- To isolate new microbial taxa from different environments and to check their functional roles and their secondary metabolites.
- To serve as a launching pad for devising, using, and managing microbiology tools for generation of products, processes and technologies.
- To augment the productivity, efficiency and cost effectiveness of food and agriculture, health and medicine, environment friendly technologies, bio-conservation and bio-industrial development.
